If something has been around for half a century, it must be doing something right. Like the Henri Lloyd Viking Smock, for example.
The Viking Smock was designed in the 1960s as a sturdy waterproof jacket for use at sea. Sir Francis Chichester wore the company’s designs on his pioneering trip around the world in 1966, which is a testament to its endurance amongst the elements. And it is still a label that has remained popular in the nautical community.
But Henri Lloyd pushed out beyond that, albeit unintentionally. A couple of decades later, the Paninaro scene in Milan adopted the label, with kids in the UK following suit in the 1990s.
Back in 2010, cult clothing store Oi Polloi did a mini range with Henri Lloyd, bringing back some key classics from the range – including this Viking Smock. And here it is once more, albeit updated a little from the 1960s.
There are more prominent logos compared to the 1960s original, but also a different construction. These days, it combines a high-performance three-layer construction with ‘impeccable waterproofing’, which is down to its seam-sealed technology. It is also made entirely from 100 per cent recycled polyester, along with YKK Aquaguard zips and an adjustable hood to keep you dry on a boat or in a nasty downpour on land.
But it is still the 1960s smock, in a choice of three colours. But with a modern touch. And a modern price. £295 is the price of one of these right now.
