Mods Coat by Fujito

Japanese labels have a thing for recreating vintage menswear, with the Mods Coat by Fujito being another example.

Of course, it doesn’t come cheap. Because these designs are rarely produced cheaply in Japan. The market is for quality reproductions in modest numbers, and that’s what you get here – and with a price to match. It’s not cheap to import this stuff into the UK, either.

Fujito is a clothing label based in Fukuoka, Japan, operating for over 20 years. Denim is its focal point, but the general range is ‘new classics’, all carefully produced by craftsmen in Japan, mainly in western Japan. It is harder to find in the UK than (say) Beams Plus, but it has expanded over the last seven or eight years, so you can find it if you look hard enough.

And this coat is available in the UK. Typical of what the brand offers in terms of reinvented classics. Described as the Mods Coat, this is a reinvention of the vintage military parka, this time made from the company’s original Oxford cloth (essentially cotton) with a washed finish to give it an aged/vintage look.

There’s a drawstring waist, fishtail detail, stud fastening cuff, an inside chest pocket, two hip pockets with flaps and a choice of classic olive green or a darker blue.

Both are available directly from the maker if you want to shop in Japan. You’ll pay taxes and shipping (and have a long wait to get it, I would guess), but the price is something like £356 from them.

It is more expensive, as you would expect if you want to buy in the UK. Tonic Menswear has the olive green for £620 in limited sizes.
