This is not the first time I have mentioned this maker, but it is the first feature for the wonderful 1960s MaTeS Atlantis Classic trainers.
You might recall past mentions of the Spanish footwear company via the 1950s MaTeS Myrna Classic trainers and the handmade 1960s MaTeS Carmel Classic design. Both proved very popular. I suspect these will get people talking, too.
This is an all-rounder, developed in the 1960s (specifically 1967) to take in a variety of sporting disciplines. High performance in the day, but probably not what athletes look for 50+ years later.
But that’s not the market today. This is old-school cool, aimed at people who might look at something like the Adidas Gazelle but also want a shoe that makes them stand out from the crowd. However, the suede upper might limit use right now. Not that it seems to stop people from wearing a suede Gazelle in the winter months.
That minimalist suede upper, in three colour options, is definitely a selling point, finished with contrasting white details, a cushioned construction and excellent breathability. The latter to help with the warmer weather in Spain. A non-slip sole, too.
Like the rest of the range, these are handmade in Barcelona and, as such, cost a little more than your mass-produced trainers. €152 for a pair of these.
