Beams Plus, out of Japan, has a reputation for high-quality clothing. I’m still regularly wearing shirts I bought a decade or so ago. They tend to set the bar that bit higher in Japan, although the cost of production and shipping to the UK does bump the price up a little.

If you can be bothered doing the maths and waiting, you might get it a bit cheaper at Amazon Japan. But you will need to check the bottom line for delivery and duty to compare. Alternatively, buy in the UK. The new styles are just out and if you can find your size, a couple of the older styles are in the sale.

Old or new, the look is very much of the past. A 1960s-style knit, made of 100 per cent soft wool and available in three colour options. Each has a bold vertical stripe design, a classic polo collar and a three-button placket.
