It’s great to see the John Simons Made In England cord overcoats back on the racks after quite some time away.
These appeared back in 2019 and proved popular – selling out, in fact. And I think they came back the year after. But I don’t recall them being around for some time. So if you missed out, good news.
They catch the eye because makers rarely go bold with cord. I have featured a growing number of cord designs in recent years, but its the usual stuff of trousers and trucker jackets in the main.
But if you want something more substantial, look this way. The design is pretty much what you would expect of the title and of John Simons. A timeless autumn/winter coat based on a classic raincoat or mac, but with some cord construction in a selection of colours.
The design, by the way, is based upon a vintage coat famously purchased and worn by our very own proprietor in 1961, whilst working as a window dresser for Cecil Gee on Charing Cross Road. It has become the standard cut for all John Simons raincoats and overcoats.
The detail is minimal, which is often a good thing. You are looking at concealed buttons (with the exception of the top button, a standard raincoat collar, buttoned cuffs and two slanted button pockets. The reverse shows a small centre-back vent, too. That’s it, and that is enough.
Just two colours to choose from this year, which you can see here, with the coat being constructed from a heavy Italian corduroy fabric, making it warm to wear as well as good to look at. Talking of looking good, there’s a Cupro Satin lining within too,
As for price, it doesn’t come cheap at £495, but the John Simons Made In England cord overcoats compare well with other premium overcoats but is still a hefty amount to pay. Look after it and it should be an investment for years to come. This isn’t an item that will date. Sizes are small through to XXL.
