I love a nice bit of retro sportswear, especially when it’s as wearable as this New York Cosmos 1977 training shirt by TOFFS.
No matter what the US does with football (or soccer), the spectre of the 1970s will always hang over it. At that time, some of the greatest players in the world headed to the US to see out their final years. And the biggest name of all was the New York Cosmos.
Starting in 1970 and running (initially) until 1984, it was the biggest name in the league, with the biggest names playing and headed up. by Pele and Franz Beckenbauer. It was the most glamorous team in world football for an all too brief moment, and as a result, its badge and kits also became iconic.
Yes, you can still buy replica shirts. There’s a healthy range available at TOFFS itself. But I’m drawn to this less obvious design from 1977.
This is not a match shirt; it is a training top that works well on a casual wear level in the 21st century. It’s a strong look with the colourful tipping to the collar and sleeves, and that classic badge sits on the right-hand side of the chest.
It’s a heavyweight cotton jersey made from soft, durable 2-ply combed cotton, which is said to retain its shape when machine-washed. Made in the UK and available in a full range of sizes, it retails for £51.

Note also that Ebbets Field has just issued a premium 1976 baseball cap from the team too,
